Michael Eggleston Publishes “Fire on the Water, The General Slocum Disaster”
Michael Eggleston has published the new book, Fire on the Water, The General Slocum Disaster.
Over a thousand people died in less than ten minutes when the Paddle Steamer
General Slocum caught fire in the East River of New York City. This history
tells the story of the disaster, minute by minute from the time the fire started
until the Slocum was beached on North Brother Island in the East River.
The consequences of the disaster are explained. This was the deadliest inland
maritime disaster in New York history and nationally it is second only to the
Civil War incident, the Sultana. This book is organized to tell the story
of the disaster followed by the immediate aftermath in terms of the impact on
survivors and lastly the causes and consequences for those at fault. One report
included in this history stands out among other references. The government
established a commission to investigate the General Slocum disaster. The
result of commission hearings produced findings and recommendations that were
sent to President Theodore Roosevelt. He, in turn, issued directives designed to
prevent such a tragedy from happening, again. This was all done in record time
but one should bear in mind that 1904 was an election year and Roosevelt needed
to demonstrate decisive action. Theodore Roosevelt won reelection to the
Presidency. The reader will find in this history 70 maps, sketches and
photographs that help understand the events and the people that influenced them.

West Point Society of N. Texas, Founders Day
L to R, Jan & Rod Grannemann, Vicki & Hampy Hodges and Coralinn & Mick Maus.
Coralinn & Mick Maus have let us know that the West Point Society of North Texas held its Founders Day Event on 5 June 2021 at a huge BBQ restaurant.
Normally it is a black tie event, of course. But a survey of the membership voted to be informal this year, (actually counted for 2020 & 2021). Mick was quick to explain that
a particularly SCARY part was that our class was the oldest in attendance. Hampy Hodges, older by a few months than Rod Grannemann
or Mick Maus gave the oldest grad address. We represented the Class well.
With around 200 in attendance it was a super evening. [Note that the Grannemanns observed their 50th wedding anniversary a few weeks earlier]

'61 Resumed Golfing Grads of USMA With 33th Tournament
Golfing Grads participants taken
by Stephanie Campbell, '88, daughter of Phil & Martha Sykes. Left to right:
Bill Williamson, Coralinn Maus, Mick Maus, Rod Grannemann, Brandon Conley,
Gene Witherspoon, Dick Clarke, Paul Vallely, Phil Mallory, Chris Conley,
Phil Sykes, Gary Hyde, Will Conley, Bob Cairns, Button Hyde and Lou Murray
(Army buddy of Bill Williamson). Mick and Coralinn's son Mike had to leave
early so was not in the photo.
After a Covid hiatus in 2020, Golfing Grads of USMA resumed with its 33th
tournament at the Robert Trent Jones' Grand National golf courses near
Auburn, Alabama from 26-28 April 2021. We were once again the senior class
among the 10 that fielded teams for the competition. Other classes
represented were 62, 63, 68, 69, 71, 73, 74, 77 and 88. Our team included
10 classmates who managed to play three straight days of golf plus three
sons and one Army friend. Coralinn Maus who has played in the past was on
injured reserve recovering from recent surgery and provided moral support.
Gary and Button Hyde joined us in the hospitality suite and for dinner on
each of the three nights after golf. Although not a golf participant, Gary
has run the computer support for management of the tournament for several
years. He handed off this job to several other younger grads this year but
was there to make sure they didn't screw up.
Although the '61 team now excels more at war-story telling than golf, a
couple of our players received a mention at the awards dinner. Phil Mallory
got a "nearest the pin" prize and Will Conley won third place in his flight.
The rest of us considered it a victory to finish three straight rounds
without cramping up! We also excelled at chatting up the young Auburn coeds
who staffed the beverage carts and worked the club house grille. The second
night was reserved for class dinners and we gathered at an outstanding
Auburn restaurant named "Acre." Meal and service was excellent and we were
pleasantly surprised to have Paul Vallely pop for the bar tab. Thanks, PV!
We missed our former team captain, Jerry White, and two who had signed up
but had to withdraw -- Frank Egan and our Aggie associate, Chuck Chamberlin.
Get well guys!
Suffice to say, everyone had a great time in Alabama.

Orlando Mini-Reunion Rescheduled to 13-18 May 2021
I (Gary Hyde) imagine that several of you that were previously not planning to join us for the 2021 Orlando Mini may change your mind since the 60th was cancelled.
I need to change hotels for the Mini to handle the added numbers and need to get a head count estimate as soon as possible. If you have not already registered and think you might attend,
I ask that you complete your registration as soon as you can. Maybe’s are OK – you can always change your mind later. Read on and use the link to register.
Several Classmates have observed that since the 60th Reunion at West Point has been cancelled we could now rescheduel the Orlando Mini-Reunion to May to allow more time for us
to get our vaccinations to begin to take hold. The Mini is now scheduled for the same days in May that the Reunion had been scheduled. For those of you that already registered,
We will change your arrival and departure day to the corresponding date in May for the day of the week you entered. If you made a hotel reservation for the March dates, you should cancel that reservation.

Eggleston ’61 Publishes “The Colorado War 1864-1865”
Mike Eggleston '61 has published a new book entitled
The Colorado War 1864-1865. This book tells the history of the war that occurred in Colorado Territory during the Civil War. The major conflict involved the fight between Native Americans and
Colorado volunteer regiments in 1865. Others were involved including Confederate regiments and outlaws. This book interrelates activities in the Great Plains with politics in Washington, army headquarters in the field,
settlers on the Frontier and the Native Americans. It shows how other Indian wars influenced the war in Colorado and how the war spread to other states and territories. Where ever possible, the conflicts are explained in the words of the participants captured in letters, diaries and newspaper
articles. Nearly a hundred maps and photos are included to describe the actions. This history shows the impact of the many treaties signed: how they were violated and the result of the treaties on the way of life
of the whites and Native Americans. The focus of this book is on the military campaigns and battles fought in or near Colorado how they destroyed the Native American way of life. Famous battles such as the
Sand Creek Massacre and Wounded Knee are covered, but lesser known campaigns such as Red Cloud's War are also included, since these had a major effect on treaties and on the people involved.
The Native American wars ended much as they had started with mistakes, confusion and the tragedy of Wounded Knee.
