Patrick J. Carroll

Born in Highland Falls, New York on 09/26/39
Departed in Birmingham, MI on 07/02/23

Patrick J. Carroll, Jr. of Birmingham, MI completed his highly adventurous life at home surrounded by his beloved wife Gerry and his children. Pat was the son of Patrick and Katherine Carroll and was raised as a youngster in Highland Falls, NY during WWII while his father was overseas serving in the US Navy. Pat then attended Christ the King Grade School in Atlanta, GA and St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, OH where he was a highly accomplished football player and, most importantly, met the love of his life, Gerry Barrett. He also caddied at Canterbury Golf Club where he was introduced to the game he loved so much.

In 1957, Pat accepted his appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY where he graduated in 1961. Pat and Gerry were married at West Point in the Holy Trinity Catholic Chapel on August 5th, 1961. Their honeymoon consisted of a drive to Fort Benning, GA where they started their “Army Life” and where Pat completed Basic Infantry, Airborne, and Ranger Schools. Pat’s first permanent posting was to Fort Campbell, KY where he was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division.

After completing his three-year obligation in the service, Pat pursued a career in technical sales and marketing. After twenty years in industry and having earned his MBA through Michigan State University’s evening program, Pat acquired a small, job shop machining operation, Royal Oak Boring in 1981. Over the years, Royal Oak Industries (ROI) expanded to multiple operations in Michigan, Indiana, South Carolina, and Texas. Its customer base included Detroit Diesel, Allison Transmission, Caterpillar, Cummins, John Deere and multiple customers in the high-performance engine aftermarket. Pat was always most proud of his talented and loyal employee base. At one time or another, often just for summer employment, all five of Pat’s children were employed in the business, as well.

Pat stepped aside at ROI in 1996 to begin a long and enjoyable retirement with Gerry. Using their cottage in Boyne City, MI as their home port, they boated all over the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence River, Erie Canal, Hudson River and up and down the East Coast. Pat and Gerry also travelled the world. Pat, as an avid hunter, pursued his passion in Asia, Africa, and across North America. Locally, Pat enjoyed duck hunting in Canada with his Labrador retrievers and golfing at Pine Lake CC. He was also a devout parishioner of the St. Hugo and Holy Name Catholic churches and a member of the Catholic faith organizations Legatus and the Sovereign Order of Malta.

Pat’s most beloved part of life was his family. Pat was father to Chris Ulrich, Joe, Dan (Kathy), Dr. Mike (Dr. Maria) and Mark (Amy) Carroll. He was grandfather to Dr. Liz Ulrich MacLean (Joe), Jack Ulrich, First Lieutenant Will Ulrich (Air Force), John, Paul, Mia, Ella, Christy, Shannon, Meghan, Brian, Second Lieutenant Henry (Army), PJ, Mary Kate, Charlie, Ashley, Heidi, and Mia Carroll. Finally, he was great-grandfather to Maggie MacLean. Pat’s greatest pride and joy was assembling his entire family for holidays, celebrations, and parties of one sort or another in Birmingham, Boyne City, or Naples, FL. He died in peace, thankful to the Lord for his many blessings.
