To the Gleichenhaus Family
I, like all of Pete’s West Point classmates, am capsized by the
news of his passing. He was always the strong one; someone we always figured
would be standing above our graves with a flower in hand.
Pete was someone we knew we could count on to be there with a
twinkle in his eye and a positive word. Army officers always judge their peers
by a harsh standard: “Is this someone I would want on my left or right in
combat?” No question about Pete. He would be there, faithful to himself, to his
family, his friends and to his country.
Pete and I shared a great friend, Johnny Eielson. We were on the
Beast Barracks detail together reveling at being third year men called cows.
That first summer for new cadets is daunting. Lots of pressure, tons of
corrections and not much sleep.
Pete and Johnny hatched a scheme that I watched them perform.
When the new cadets spilled out of the dining facility one evening, running to
get ready to their next formation, Pete would stand in front of one of them,
calling, “ALT!”
He would then enjoin the new guy into “looookink lik the Amerikan
IGGLE, pooping up the chest lick zee Amerikan BEEZON!”
At a certain point, the plebe would begin to smirk. Pete would
look a bit confused. Then, Johnny would jump into the picture, saying, “Mister!
Are you making fun of our foreign cadets? They are just as good as you are, you
know!”
By the time they finished, the poor new guy would be almost
reduced to tears of remorse for having belittled a poor immigrant. Then Pete and
Johnny would laugh and send the dizzy young man on his way.
I will miss him terribly. But I know that wherever Pete has gone,
his old comrades will embrace him with open arms as one of the best they ever
knew.
