Arriving in Mainz Germany after all the "schools" I served with the "Devils in Baggy Pants" and shared a bachelor pad with Ralph Garens until I was "selected" to go to Bad Kreuznach where I met Renate. Bob Frix was our best man. After 4 years in Europe RVN was calling so I returned to Ft Lewis and sailed across the Pacific with A/3rd of the 12th Infantry. Following that year I belatedly "went Engineers" to Belvoir instead of Benning. I always liked the water and boats so they kept me on for about 9 months in the Float Bridge Branch at Tompkins Basin, Ft Belvoir-- you know-- the Dog and Pony Show we all saw on the Cow Trip. We also got a little sailboat to race on Sundays on the Potomac off National Airport. Back to RVN for a year at Pleiku and Boa Loc, then 16 months in Corvallis, OR for civil school. The "utilization tour" was with Pittsburg District. Then Leavenworth next door to Jim & Diane Royce. We went back to Germany, 2 years in Stuttgart, a year in Karlsruhe, and 2 years in Heidelberg. Then back to US of A at Ft Ord and a final assignment with Portland District before retirement in 83. I worked for the Water Bureau in Portland for 7 years until I heard the call of the sea. We bought a boat, decided 30 ft wasn't big enough to carry all the stuff you need to live on the water, bought a second boat in San Francisco, and lived on it for 7 years. This adventure drew to a close when the 1st mate wanted a garden but didn't want to cross another ocean. We were in Turkey at the time so we left "Inertia" in Kusadasi, Turkey with a broker who finally sold her 3 years later. Meanwhile and ever since we have enjoyed a happy land based life on the Oregon coast. We bought another boat, have a great garden and I play hillbilly music in a band a couple times a week. My son Paul is only as far as Portland.
